Europe fines TikTok approx 5061 crore for illegal data transfer

Europe fines TikTok €530 million for illegal data transfer. The Irish Data Protection Commission has fined TikTok 530 million(approx 5061 crore) for violating European Union GDPR data protection rules under legal provisions. The administrative fines imposed by the Irish watchdog consist of a fine of €485 million for its infringement of Article 46(1) GDPR regarding the lawfulness of the data transfers to China and a fine of €45 million for its infringement of Article 13(1)(f) regarding the lack of transparency.

TikTok has been given six months to fix everything. If the company does not update its policies in time or fails to do so, China plans to suspend all data transfers.

DPC officials also said that the issue goes beyond the location of the servers and is also about the risk that Chinese authorities could access the data of European users under domestic laws concerning terrorism and espionage, which contravene EU standards.

In April 2025, TikTok announced that it had learned in February 2025 that some of EEA user data was being stored on Chinese servers.
